The Bioactive Setup Builder

The Bioactive Setup Builder

Three questions. One complete plan: substrate layers, the right cleanup crew with counts, a seeding timeline, and the exact kit to build it.
1What is this enclosure for?
2How big is the enclosure?
3What climate does this setup run?
Pick your animal first and we will preselect this.
How bioactive works
Your animal makes waste, and the cleanup crew eats it before it can rot.
Springtails patrol for mold and fungus, the problems you cannot see yet.
Isopods shred leaf litter and waste into castings that feed your plants.
Plants drink those nutrients, and the loop starts over.

Quick answers
How long before my animal can move in?
Seed springtails first, then give the tank 3 to 5 weeks before the animal goes in. The crew needs that head start to establish and to clear the mold bloom every new build gets.
Do I need a drainage layer?
Only in humid, planted builds that get misted, like dart frog and chameleon setups. Temperate and arid builds skip it and use a deeper substrate instead.
Will the cleanup crew bother my animal?
Not if you match the crew to the animal. Dwarf Whites and Powders are safe with reptiles and amphibians. We never place Dairy Cow or other large Porcellio with a live animal, they are protein driven and can nibble a resting reptile.
Do I still have to clean a bioactive tank?
Yes, a little. Spot clean large waste for the first month while the crew grows into the job. After that the crew handles daily waste and you mostly top up leaf litter.
Can I mix different isopod species in one enclosure?
One species per enclosure works best. Faster breeders usually crowd out the slower ones over time, so mixed bins drift toward a single species anyway.
How many isopods and springtails do I actually need?
For most builds, 10 to 20 isopods and one 8oz springtail culture start a 20 gallon tank, and colonies grow to fit. For a count tuned to your exact enclosure, use our cleanup crew calculator.
